Widnoon Soft Serve (Ice Cream Challenge)

Week 2 of the Armstrong Ice Cream Challenge is complete! The second stop on the journey was Widnoon Soft Serve, north of Templeton PA. Widnoon is legendary in the northern part of the County, with over 12,000 followers on Facebook. It was a bit of a drive to get there, but it’s stunningly beautiful on the back roads, and we were rewarded with some great ice cream at the end of our trip.

At each shop we travel to, we ask to try three ice cream treats: The Classic, The Crowd Favorite, and The Craziest Creation. For more details on the categories, check out this intro video: https://youtu.be/ZQ2LE8x9AyA.

These were their entries for the challenge:

The Classic – This one was a bit different. We had a classic flavor in a modern format. We tried their Strawberry Pretzel Salad Sundae. It starts with a fresh, homemade waffle bowl filled with vanilla ice cream and is topped with strawberries, marshmallow sauce, whole pretzels, whipped cream, and a cherry on top for good measure. My one complaint about a normal strawberry pretzel salad is that the textures don’t work after just a short period of time. The pretzels get soggy and the flavors start to meld in weird ways. This sundae solved all of those problems. The pretzels stay fresh and crisp, the flavors are separate and distinct, and you won’t have to worry about leftovers. This creation was so delicious, it would never last long in our family. 😊

The Crowd Favorite – I had seen the Ice Cream Nachos on social media last year, and I was happy that Lynda, the owner of Widnoon Soft Serve, had selected these as her crowd favorite. The large version gets you three ice cream flavors with whatever toppings you want with waffle cone pieces for ‘chips’ to dip. This is such a unique creation. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anything like it before. It is HUGE as well. It would be a wonderful way for someone to try a lot of different flavors at Widnoon and we loved it. It’s the most ‘Instagram’ worthy creation we’ve found so far and would be worth the trip by itself.

The Craziest Creation – Not to be outdone by ice cream cakes at other ice cream shops, Widnoon makes ice cream pies! Layers of soft serve and your favorite toppings leads to the perfect party creation. These pies are 5 ½ inches tall and could feed a small army. We tried two that Lynda sent home with us. 1. The ‘Candy Lovers’ was a combination of vanilla and chocolate soft serve with every chocolate candy they have at Widnoon all packed in a fudge covered, chocolate cookie crust. My mouth is watering again as I write this. 2. The ‘Cherry Cheesecake’ was a pie creation using the flavor of the week, which was cherry at the time of our visit. It was also great (but not as good as the other, according to this chocolate lover 😉). Widnoon will custom make ice cream pies for your special occasion, so make sure to think of them for your next summer get together.

Overall, we can see why Widnoon has such a large fanbase. The creativity, quality, and portion sizes give an incredible value that will be hard to match anywhere. Make plans to visit them soon and don’t forget to follow them on Facebook to check out their weekly flavors and specials.

The next video comes out on Sunday, May 23rd, at 7PM, so check back next week as we continue the Armstrong Ice Cream Challenge!
